Official Name in Human Design: The Darkening of the Light and the Gate of Crisis

Purpose: To provide the emotional fuel to transform crisis and turbulence into compassion and deepening of the human experience.

Human Design definition: The rule of cycles in which decline is a natural but not enduring stage. Action without awareness leads to emotional crisis. A shift of feeling is the end of a cycle.

In action: Cultivating compassion for oneself and others.

Body graph location: Solar Plexus, connecting to the Throat via Gate 35.

Grounding energy: Friction, Gate 6

Tropical astrology sign: Pisces

Gene Keys: Turbulence -> Humanity -> Compassion

I Ching: Brightness Hiding (Ming Yi)

Dates of solar transit (can vary by 1 to 2 days): March 12 - March 17

The 36th Gate, Key, and Hexagram represent and embody the process of facing and transcending life's crises, transforming turbulence into compassion, and the deepening of human experience.

Defined in Chart: Individuals with Gate 36 defined in their charts often experience intense emotional journeys, with a propensity to face crises that can lead to significant personal growth. They may have a deep understanding of the human condition, forged through their experiences.

Sun Transit: When the sun transits through Gate 36, it brings a collective focus on the role of crisis and emotional depth in personal growth. It's a time to recognize how challenges can lead to greater understanding and transformation.

The high-frequency expression is the energy for offering compassion to oneself and others as compassion is essential for overcoming suffering and crisis. This energy is able to see themselves and humanity in everyone, and from this space of empathy, can soothe unnecessary suffering.

The low-frequency expression is repressing emotions, lacking empathy, staying in feelings of inadequacy and seeking out emotional drama.

My personal experience:

I do not have this energy defined in my chart, however, it is the location of my descent (opposite my rising sign in my birth chart), signifying a familiarity with this energy. I found myself deeply studying the energy of 36 last year as the solar transit coincided with the passing of my grandfather and his memorial service.

Human Design Gate 36: Navigating Life's Challenges with Humanity and Compassion

From Turbulence to Compassion: The Journey of Becoming

Quarter of Initiation, the Realm of Alcyone
Theme: Purpose fulfilled through Mind
Mystical Theme: The Witness Returns
Gate 22 < Gate 36 > Gate 25

This Gate is part of the Channel of Transitoriness, A Design of a 'Jack of All Trades', linking the Solar Plexus Center (Gate 36) to the Throat Center (Gate 35). Gate 36 is part of the Collective Sensing (Abstract) Circuit with the keynote of sharing.

Gate 36 is the place where our fears of vulnerability and inexperience (emotional and sexual) are resolved or transformed into experience; where we create and meet the challenges of change and growth through emotional crises. As we gain emotional clarity over time, we learn how to handle emotional crises created by others, and we create less of them ourselves. Gate 36 restrains the strong hope-to-pain wave that drives human experience toward change. Its energy is aimed directly at the Throat Center, which means that the full range and depth of our emotions are being readied for manifestation. All that is needed is someone or something to trigger their release.

Without Gate 35 to provide a proper outlet or give a focused direction to this energy, it can be experienced as a personal crisis. We learn over time to remain steady by patiently adapting to constantly changing feelings. These feelings can prove to be wonderfully stimulating and natural for us to express, or overwhelming to us and uncomfortable for others. Either way let them unfold, as this is how we reach for our emotional depth in order to access our own truth. Without Gate 35, feeling inadequate and unable to fulfill our own expectations makes us nervous.

Gene Key 36: Embracing Humanity through the Turbulence of Life

The Evolution of Emotional Resilience and Compassion

“The 36th Gift doesn’t freeze. It doesn’t close down. It stays open. Wow. Do you know what that entails? Someone or something completely threatens to overwhelm us, and we stay open. Our heart may recoil for a few moments, but we breathe deeply into our chest, anchor ourself in the belly, and look the experience right in the eye.”

– Richard Rudd, 64 Ways

Gene Key 36, titled "Becoming Human," encapsulates the transformative journey from the Shadow of Turbulence to the Siddhi of Compassion, with the Gift of Humanity as the vital intermediary. This path illustrates how navigating life's emotional storms can deepen our empathy and understanding of the human condition.

Shadow - Turbulence:

  • The Shadow of Turbulence in Gene Key 36 represents the tumultuous and often chaotic nature of our emotional landscape. It manifests as periods of intense emotional upheaval, uncertainty, or conflict, which can lead to stress, anxiety, and disconnection.
  • Personal Application: Recognize and acknowledge the turbulent phases in your life. Rather than avoiding or suppressing these emotional challenges, see them as opportunities for deepening your understanding of yourself and others. Use these experiences to cultivate resilience and a more profound insight into the human psyche.

Gift - Humanity:

  • The Gift of Humanity involves embracing the full spectrum of human emotions with empathy and understanding. It’s about seeing the value in all our experiences, both joyful and challenging, and using them to connect more authentically with others. Humanity here means acknowledging our shared vulnerability and strengths, leading to a deeper connection and mutual support.
  • Personal Application: Foster the gift of humanity by being present and compassionate with yourself and others during times of emotional difficulty. Practice active listening and empathy, acknowledging the shared experiences that unite us as human beings. Let your interactions be guided by kindness, understanding, and a genuine desire to support and uplift others.

Siddhi - Compassion:

  • The Siddhi of Compassion represents a transcendent state of profound empathy and unconditional love that arises from deep emotional understanding. It’s about transcending personal suffering and connecting with the collective experience of humanity, leading to compassionate action and service.
  • Personal Application: Cultivate a state of consciousness where compassion is your natural response to life’s experiences. Let your heart be open to feeling the joys and sorrows of others, and let this deep empathy guide your actions and interactions. Recognize that true compassion is a force that can transform not only individual lives but also the world at large.

Gene Key 36 invites us on an enriching journey from the chaos of emotional turbulence, through the grounding power of humanity, to the exalted state of compassion. This path teaches us to embrace our emotional experiences as gateways to deeper understanding and empathy, leading to a life infused with compassion and a profound connection to the collective human experience.

I Ching Hexagram 36: Navigating Through Adversity with Inner Light

When the world grows dark,
your inner light is given definition.

I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape, the loneliness of it – the dead feeling of winter.
Something waits beneath it – the whole story doesn’t show.

– Andrew Wyeth

In the I Ching, Hexagram 36, often translated as "Darkening of the Light" or "Ming I," symbolizes a period of adversity or challenge, where one's virtues or talents need to be concealed or protected. It represents the wisdom of preserving one's integrity and inner light during difficult times.

2. Wisdom of Concealment:

  • Personal Application: Practice discernment about when to express your talents and insights. In challenging situations, it may be prudent to keep your capabilities discreet until a more opportune time arises for them to be appreciated and effectively utilized.

3. Cultivating Resilience and Patience:

  • The hexagram emphasizes the need for resilience and patience during dark times. It implies that adversity is often temporary, and preserving one’s inner strength and virtue will lead to brighter times ahead.
